It?s back to the Irish Hills of Michigan International Raceway. This used to be a track where Roush dominated, but recently it seems that anybody but a Ford driver can win.
Group A
Matt Kenseth ? It?s been some time since his last win here, back in August 2006, but he?s had a couple of close calls the last 2 races. Overall, he has 11 top-5?s, including 2 wins, in 24 starts.
Bench Pick: Carl Edwards ? The last time a Roush driver won at Michigan, Edwards was the one to get it done in 2008. His overall stats here are better than teammate Kenseth, 64.3% of finishes in top-5, which also includes 2 wins. Also, like Kenseth, his last 2 races were top-5 finishes.
Group B
Joey Logano ? He had the pole at Pocono but bad luck with a flat tire gave him a 26h place finish. However, he did really well last week and survived the mad finish at The Glen in 5th. I think his experience level is catching up with him finally where he can compete now.
Kasey Kahne ? Kahne was on the pole in last August?s race, but finished 14th. In 15 starts, he?s picked up 6 top-5 finishes, including a win from the pole in 2006 when he was with Ray Everham.
Bench Pick: Ryan Newman ? Newman is on somewhat of a roll with a win from the pole at New Hampshire, 5th place start at Pocono, and 6th place finish at Watkins Glen. Should match well with the 6th place finish at the June Michigan race.
Bench Pick: Brad Keselowski ? Keselowski has now taking over the Superman cape from Carl Edwards. Winning the Pocono race with a freshly broke ankle and turning around the next week finishing a grueling road course race in 2nd. Michigan isn?t one of his better tracks, but I can?t count out his grit and momentum.
Group C
Paul Menard ? Menard won the Brickyard, then has a top-10 start and finish at Pocono. Road courses are not for everybody and are obviously different from ovals. What works in Menard?s favor, he finished 4th in the June race here.
Bench Pick: David Ragan ? It?s not a mile-and-a-halfer that Ragan?s usually good for but having a Roush car at Michigan should count for something. The only question is whether or not he?s recovered from his wreck last week at The Glen.
