Did the recession speed up a role reversal in the sexes?

Stay at home dadTheatlantic.com reports that last year, for the first time in US history, the number of women in the workforce overtook men. According to the magazine, most managers in the US are now women and the number of women getting college degrees last year outnumbered men by three to two.

There is an argument that this is simply a sign of increasing gender equality, but another major contributing factor is the recession. The magazine highlights that three quarters of the 8 million people who became unemployed were men. Male-dominated industries were the worst hit by the recession: construction, manufacturing and high finance. The magazine goes as far as to say that this basically accelerated and highlighted a larger economic shift that could see US workplaces and industries more suited to women than men in the future.

However, while women are at work, who?s left ?holding the baby??

In Great Britain, it?s been reported by a national newspaper, mailonline.com, that there is a growing role-reversal in breadwinner/housewife relationships. It reports that in one in seven families in the UK, ?dad? stays at home with the kids, while ?mum? goes out to work.

In fact, a new survey indicates 1.4 million British dads are the primary caregiver to their kids, which is ten times more than just a decade ago. Of the dads surveyed, around half of them (46%) look after their kids because their partner can earn more than them.

This growing trend is partly down to the closing ?pay gap? between men and women in the UK, where on average, women under 30 actually earn more than men. (While older women often earn less than men because of career breaks to start and raise a family.) If one half of a couple with kids earns more, it makes financial sense for them to carry on working, regardless of whether they?re male or female.

Most of the stay-at-home dads seemed really happy in their role. Only one in eight reckoned that looking after their kids was actually harder than working full time ? which suggests it?s not all about the money after all and most generally enjoy raising their children!
